The project allows a considerable improvement in agricultural production, thus making the country less dependent on imported fresh produce.
Launched in recent years, China's project to help agriculture in Samoa is a success. Agricultural experts, selected seeds, facilities and technologies from China can significantly improve Samoa's agricultural production.
Launched in 2010, SCATAP (Samoa-China Agricultural Technical Aid Project) was designed to help Samoan farmers increase their productivity. China has provided a total of USD 6 million for the project which is divided into 4 phases. Chinese agricultural experts have been assigned to work in Samoa until 2020.
Demonstration farms have been set up, using high quality seeds, innovative methods and technologies. Greenhouse cultivation, high yielding fruit growing, use of organic fertilizers, soil improvement.
According to the Chinese experts, the demonstration farms are currently growing more than 40 varieties of crops under test and 15 of them have been selected by the Samoan authorities. Eggplant, cucumbers, broccoli, green peppers, watermelons and oranges are grown in these demonstration farms operated by Chinese experts.
With this high-quality vegetable and fruit production, the country should be able to meet its needs and be able to significantly reduce the import of fresh produce.
