Pomegranate of Elche towards recognition of DOP

Start of the process DOP (denominación de origen).

With the release of Boletín Oficial del Estado (Official Gazette), the process for the protection of Elche pomegranate under the designation of origin (denominación de origen, DOP) is launched.

The dossier presented to the DOP "Granada Mollar Elche" is a detailed product description, and the production area (Bajo Vinalopó Alacantí, Bajo Segura). Producers will have to wait a few months before the official set up of the label.

The cultivation of Mollar pomegranate is a long tradition that goes back to more than 1000 years according to some. In the area of Elche pomegranate cultivation covers about 2100 hectares and produces 45 000 tons of fruits.
