Rain disrupts supply, vegetable prices rise in Pune, western India
VU
Coriander, spinach, and tomato prices spike by around 30%.
Continuous rainfall across Pune and nearby districts has damaged farmland, especially leafy vegetables, leading to lower supply and higher market prices, according to Indian media.
Retailers said coriander, spinach, and tomato prices have surged by around 30%. Wholesalers explained that heavy rain and moisture have spoiled much of the produce, pushing up prices for good-quality items.
At the city’s APMC market, vegetable arrivals dropped to about 1,450 vehicles — well below the usual 1,800. Traders estimate total supply has fallen by 30–40%, with much of the stock going to waste due to poor quality.
In retail markets, a bunch of coriander or spinach now costs over ₹30 ($0.36), while premium leafy greens exceed ₹40 ($0.48). Shoppers said prices have risen sharply in recent days and hope rates will ease once the rain stops.
