In Qatar, organic production is increasing and diversifying to meet rising demand.
Demand for organic products in Qatar and throughout the Gulf region is growing considerably, to meet initiatives that are developing to produce locally any type of fruit and vegetables.
A farm in Qatar cultivates organic products on 12 hectares and plans to increase its areas to 10,000 hectares within 10 years. The latest technologies used to increase production (tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers) and diversify it (melons, strawberries). There will also be productions of papaya and mango.
These locally grown organic products compete with imported products from Holland, Spain and Morocco. Qatar is starting to reduce its imports of tomatoes, peppers and mushrooms by about 5% now.
