The United States has proclaimed December "National Month of the Pear".
The month of December has been proclaimed "National Pear Month" by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In the Pacific Northwest, home to 84% of U.S pear production, a bumper crop is expected.
The weather is perfect with the right amount of rain in Oregon and Washington that will give a record harvest.
The 10 main varieties of pears cultivated are: Red and Green Anjou, Bartlett and Red Bartlett, Bosc, Comice, Forelle, Seckel, Starkrimson and Concorde.
Many initiatives have sprung up around the country to promote the consumption of pears: cookbooks, tv shows, original recipes from chiefs, gourmet meals in restaurants.
