Spring in the Canary Islands is highlighted this year by temperatures above 30 degrees. Potato growers are concerned about a possible yield reduction of 10 to 20%. To counteract this unusual heat, they are increasing irrigation from once every week or ten days to every four days.
Local growers describe it as "horrible, never seen before." The potato, which should be harvested in mid-May, is already maturing earlier and smaller. They need it cool and rainy, but they also face water shortages.
This year, crops are affected by rising sea temperatures and persistent haze. Water consumption has increased, driving up production costs and thus final prices, which have risen by as much as 50% since the pandemic.
The short-term weather forecast does not bring many changes, although some weak rains are expected. A trough could bring moderate showers next week.
