A historic drought hits California
FJ
Never seen before for 100 years and perhaps more, some believe that this is the worst drought in 500 years.
The image provided by an observation satellite is used to compare the situation between 13 January 2013 and 13 January 2014. Snow cover in the northern state and Nevada, which allows to supply the California with water is almost non-existent this year. Drought affects more than 62% of all California.
As the almond producers do not have enough water for their trees they begin to snatch them. Some operators prefer to remove 20% of their orchards to try to save the rest.
One of the emblematic places of the country, Silicon Valley and its nearly 2 million residents must also save water. Water restrictions become mandatory, a reduction of at least 20% compared to 2013 consumption is required.
