According to the Turkish Union of Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, there was an increase in exports of fruit and vegetables (including citrus fruits) of 8 per cent but a decrease of exports in value of 5 per cent.
Citrus fruits account for almost half of total exports. They are the ones who save the bet, with + 9% in quantity and + 5% in value. These are the varieties of mandarins that were the best-selling fresh product, followed by lemon.
Fruit accounts for 23 per cent of total exports. Despite a very slight decrease in quantity (-1%), the decrease in exports in value is -4%. Cherry is the first fruit exported, followed by grapes and grenades.
Vegetables account for 30 per cent of total exports. They had the worst season with a 22 percent decline in value, although there was a 12% increase in quantity. The most exported vegetable remains the tomato (45% of total exports of vegetables) despite a significant drop in exports.
Interestingly, although Russia has imposed significant sanctions on Turkey this year, it remains the largest importing country in terms of value (17% of total Turkish fruit and vegetable exports in 2016) despite Half of the demand, while Iraq is the largest importing country in terms of quantity (24% of total Turkish fruit and vegetable exports in 2016). Germany is the third largest importer.
