In Australia, due to bountiful harvests, onion traders foresee an oversupply in the domestic market and will try to find more international buyers.
Onions are Australia’s 4th largest vegetable crop, accounting for 9% of total vegetable production. Australian production is around 277,000 tonnes of which around 15% is exported. But this year exceptional harvests are announced for the producing regions, in particular the regions of South Australia and Tasmania.
The negative effects of the pandemic are still affecting key markets in Europe and Southeast Asia, leading to a decrease in their demand for Australian onions.
Faced with the risk of oversupply on the domestic market, Onions Australia, an association of Australian producers, is developing a strategy to find more international buyers. In particular Vietnam and Myanmar. Thailand was the biggest buyer of Australian onions last year, followed by Taiwan, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates.
