In China, demand for bananas is growing, driven by rising incomes and the growing popularity of some products such as smoothies. Banana imports have just registered a record volume in May.
Banana imports reached 227,199 tonnes in May 2019, according to the General Administration of Customs. This volume brought total shipments of fruit and nuts to 720 000 tonnes, nearly 8 times higher than the same period of 2018.
China surpassed Japan last year as the largest foreign market for Philippine bananas, according to the Xinhua News Agency. The country has purchased more than two-thirds of Philippine exports in 2018, while increasing volumes from Mexico and Cambodia. According to customs data, China purchased 1.54 million tons of bananas in 2018, an increase of 50% over the previous year.
