The programme brings together authorities and growers to improve phytosanitary conditions and support the region's agricultural sector.
Peru is reinforcing fruit fly control measures in Arequipa as part of efforts to protect local agriculture and support the region’s agroexport growth.
According to MIDAGRI, SENASA is working with more than 46,000 farmers to protect around 15,000 hectares of crops from the pest. The initiative forms part of a public-private strategy aimed at reducing phytosanitary risks and improving production conditions for export-oriented crops.
The fruit fly is one of the main threats to fruit production, as its presence can affect crop quality and limit access to international markets. For this reason, pest monitoring, control activities, and technical assistance are considered essential for maintaining the competitiveness of Arequipa’s agricultural sector.
The action plan for Arequipa includes a budget of more than S/6.5 million (US$1.8 million) and focuses on coordinated work between MIDAGRI, SENASA, regional authorities, producer organisations, and farmers.
By strengthening pest control, Peru aims to protect fruit production, improve sanitary standards, and support the continued expansion of agroexports from Arequipa.
