Starr Ranch continues program of using less plastic in packaging for organic apples

Demand for organic apples is growing during last few years. At the same time consumers demand “planet friendly” packaging, especially for organics. Last year US based Starr Ranch Growers introduced sustainable pouch bag with 25 percent less plastic and more recycled paper. At PMA Fresh Summit 2019 they presented same packaging with new graphic design and Dan Davis, Director of Business Development, announced several new cardboard cartons to be ready soon as part of company’s sustainability program.
Beginning of January Starr Ranch Growers introduced new corrugated cardboard boxes for organic Fuji apples. This is a controlled trial. Next step for the company will be to create packaging for all organic varieties.
Fuji apples were packed in plastic clam shells before. “We are reducing plastics and offer our customers sustainable packaging options”, - explains Dan Davis and adds that retailers reacted positively to previous packaging innovations as “less plastic” is answer to what consumers want.
“Corrugated cardboard boxes are easy to recycle, and the boxes can be folded and stored for later use,” comments Krista Beckstead, marketing and brand specialist. “We want to provide the best quality product in a sustainable manner. This package is a good solution for the supply chain.”
