The Rewe Group wants to reduce plastic packaging
MD
The Rewe Group in Austria is “declaring war on plastic packaging” for its ‘Ja! Natürlich’ organic private label line.
By 2015, the plastic wrapping for fruit & vegetables sold under the brand is to be reduced by 25% and replaced by FSC-certified wood.
In consistency with the range "Ja! Natürlich", which became the first organic brand in Austria, the new standards will make Rewe Group leader in environmentally friendly packaging. Some renewable materials such as cellulose film are already used for packaging of vegetables. The primary beneficiaries of this season are peppers and tomatoes.
These changes could save the use of approximately 70 tons of plastic which is representing 1.5 million liters of crude oil. The Rewe Group operates on: Billa, Merkur, Penny Markt, Bipa, Adeg.
