China is the largest apple producer in the world and can offer excellent opportunities for operators in this sector. Such is the conclusion that emerged from the conference "International Interpoma" which was recently held in Bolzano as anticipation of Interpoma 2016, the International Exhibition of Apple held from the 24th to 26th of November in the Fair of Bolzano.
Identifying new markets which could be attractive to exhibitors, the organizers chose China. The many visits to production areas and research centers confirmed that China is actively developing its apple industry.
During the M. Yongbing Yuan Conference (Qingdao Agricultural University) the current and future prospects of apple production in China was detailed. The surfaces are huge (2.3 million hectares) large production (38 million tonnes) but not widespread cooperative producers and the varieties of few apples (Fuji represents almost 73% of production). China is a major importer of agricultural machinery, with nearly 70% of that used in agriculture are imported.
Shandong Province (9.3 million tons of apples) plans by 2020 to reach 400 000 hectares with a yield of 40 tonnes / hectare, while reducing by 15% the use of water resources and labor costs as well as limiting to 30% fertilizers. The example to follow is precisely the Italian region of South Tyrol (Alto Adige).
If China turns to the Italian model, business opportunities will be numerous for exhibitors at Interpoma.
