Potato marketing will be complicated this season
VU
Potato planting in Andalusia (Spain) finishes with figures similar to those of the previous campaign, however, the sector is especially concerned about the possible consequences of the war in Ukraine, as it may affect the marketing campaign.
The diversion of production from its competitors, such as the traditional supplier of the Russian market - Egypt, to the European market due to the devaluation of the ruble, could have a negative impact on sales of new early potatoes.
In addition, the sector suffers the consequences of the general rise in prices in all necessary resources for production, management and logistics.
The area planted with new early potatoes this season is equivalent to last year’s, according to Asociafruit, a private non-profit association that represents producers and exporters in Andalusia.
This year, the early planted areas in Cartagena (Murcia) and Western Andalusia will reach 10.500 hectares, according to official data presented by both autonomous communities.
