South Korea has overtaken all other countries as Thailand’s biggest mango export market, driven by new trade policies and the viral popularity of mango sticky rice, according to Thailand’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO).
TPSO director-general Poonpong Naiyanapakorn reported that Thailand’s mango exports to South Korea reached 2.93 billion baht ($86.91 million) in 2024, marking a 132.7% increase from the previous year. This surge is largely due to South Korea’s decision to expand import quotas and cut tariffs on tropical fruits, making Thai mangos more affordable for consumers. Previously, mangos faced a 30% import tax, but with the tariff now waived, Thai mangos have gained a major price advantage.
South Korean consumers’ preference for fresh fruit, especially after meals, combined with the viral trend of mango sticky rice on social media, has further fueled demand.
Thailand’s mango exports also remain strong in Malaysia, where fresh fruit consumption and mango shakes are popular. Meanwhile, demand in Japan is rising due to health trends and the use of mangos in desserts.
The Commerce Ministry continues to support fruit exports through border trade fairs, soft power promotion, and business matching initiatives. Poonpong emphasized that maintaining quality is key to building trust and expanding Thailand’s fruit exports.
