Officials on both sides view the mango trade as part of a broader effort to deepen China‑Bangladesh economic ties.
Shoppers in China are developing a taste for mangoes from Bangladesh, thanks to their rich aroma, smooth texture, and sweet tropical flavor. Even though their skin often looks spotted or uneven, the fruit is winning fans in major cities like Changsha, where the first shipments arrived in late May 2025, according to Asian media outlets.
Bangladesh officially gained approval to export fresh mangoes to China in July 2024. Exporters say Bangladeshi mangoes stand out for being naturally grown, nearly fiber‑free, and harvested with minimal chemicals — qualities that appeal to health‑conscious Chinese shoppers. Local importers are initially distributing the fruit to e‑commerce platforms, supermarkets, and fresh produce chains to build awareness.
Bangladesh produces around 2.7 million tons of mangoes annually and plans to export about 5,000 tons in 2025. Industry leaders believe the Chinese market could drive growth for the country’s fruit sector, creating jobs and boosting rural incomes.
Officials on both sides view the mango trade as part of a broader effort to deepen China‑Bangladesh economic ties. Discussions are already under way to expand exports to guavas and jackfruits, while Chinese technology, such as fruit‑bagging methods, is helping Bangladeshi growers reduce chemical use and improve quality.
Although competition is strong from Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Pakistan, exporters see opportunity in China’s growing appetite for tropical fruits. With careful branding, strict quality control, and reliable supply chains, Bangladesh hopes its mangoes will secure a lasting spot in Chinese supermarkets.
