For this 2020/21 season, the production of oranges as well as the volume of exported fruits will increase in Egypt and South Africa, according to a recent GAIN (Global Agricultural Information Network) report from the FAS (Foreign Agricultural Service) of the USDA., the US Department of Agriculture.
Egypt
Orange is the main citrus crop in Egypt, accounting for around 80% of the total area dedicated to citrus. For this 2020/21 campaign, the planted area remains similar to the previous campaign with 168,000 hectares but the harvested area should reach 145,000 hectares, or + 3.57% compared to the previous campaign.
Orange production is expected to total 3.4 million tonnes, a variation of around + 6.2% compared to the previous season. Thanks to higher yields, better irrigation and cultivation techniques, and reduced post-harvest losses.
For this 2020/21 campaign, orange exports should reach 1.5 million tonnes, i.e. a volume greater than the 1.37 million tonnes exported during the 2019/20 campaign.
South Africa
Orange represents 50% of the total area of citrus fruit planted in South Africa. For this 2020/21 campaign, the planted area should reach 46,000 hectares, i.e. a variation of + 2% compared to the 2019/20 campaign.
Orange production is expected to total 1.70 million tonnes, a variation of + 3% compared to the previous season. Thanks in particular to the increase in the areas planted, to better water management techniques, and to new plantings of high-yielding and late-maturing varieties.
For this 2020/21 season, orange exports are expected to reach 1.32 million tonnes, which is more than the 1.29 million tonnes exported during the 2020/21 season.
