Farmers' demonstrations on the border with France are directly affecting broccoli growers in Hellín in the province of Albacete, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.
Although the harvest has been brought forward by two months due to the high temperatures, the growers have decided to temporarily halt the harvest. They prefer to pause the process to allow the plants to continue absorbing nutrients, but this strategy can only be maintained for about five more days.
The concern lies in the inability to maintain this situation for much longer. Without a solution, there is a risk of partial loss of production. When there is no other option, farmers move broccoli to cold storage at two degrees Celsius, which entails higher costs due to energy consumption and rent.
It was expected that at least four truckloads of organic broccoli from Hellín would have already left for consumers in England, Belgium or Germany. However, the current situation jeopardises the timely delivery of these products.
