The protective bags for apples contain pesticides that contaminate fruit.
A new health scandal will not improve the image of Chinese agricultural production. The Beijing News reports that farmers in Yantai used illegal pesticides in protective bags for apples. According to the newspaper, these bags contain diluted chemicals that contaminate the apples.
The bags are supposed to protect the fruit against insects and weather and it
is illegal to use pesticides. An investigation has lead to the authorities strengthening controls and quality testing of apples.
Yantai, which includes Qixia and Zhaoyuan, is one of largest production areas with a harvest of 600 million kilos of apples per year. These apples are sold in China and exported to many countries
