A customs protocol was recently signed that paves the way for the export of shelled Chilean almonds to China, marking a crucial step in the diversification of the South American country's exports. This agreement adds to efforts to explore new foreign trade opportunities and support the growth of small and medium-sized producers in highly competitive markets.
Shelled almonds, produced mainly in the O'Higgins Region and the Metropolitan Region on more than 8,700 hectares of cultivated land, are in high demand and fetch better prices in the market due to their higher level of processing.
The pacts with China materialized during the presidential visit to this Asian country in October, where the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, signed four agricultural agreements, including one on cooperation in food certificates and another for the development of a farm.
Chile is a country that has all its temperate fresh fruits authorized to enter the Chinese market. In the 2022-2023 season alone, more than 574,000 tons of fresh fruit were exported to China, with cherries being the leading product.
China continues to be Chile's main trading partner, with trade growing at an average annual rate of 14% since 2017, reaching US$65,584 million in 2022. The trade relationship between the two countries, driven by a free trade agreement in place since 2006 and updated in 2019, has been highly beneficial for Chile, with exports totaling US$39,176 million in 2022.
