Australia produced 78,085 tonnes of avocados in the 2020-21 season and then 120,000 tonnes in the 2021-22 season and forecasts indicate 170,000 tonnes by 2026 (Photo: austrade.gov.au).
“Increasing domestic consumption is a welcome trend given that production is also expected to increase,” commented John Tyas, CEO of Avocados Australia.
According to data from Avocados Australia, in the 2021-22 financial year, Australians consumed 4.76 kg of avocados per person. This represents a significant increase from the 2021/21 financial year which recorded 4.0 kg per person.
Australian consumers therefore seem to have taken advantage of the lower prices to eat more avocados. Lower prices following the huge production this year, which is approaching 120,000 tonnes.
Looking ahead, forecasts compiled by Avocados Australia show that domestic avocado production is expected to continue to rise to an average of around 170,000 tonnes per year by 2026, more than double the 2020-21 harvest. (78,085 tons).
