For 2022/23 the world production of lemons and limes should register a variation of -6.68% in volume compared to the previous season. This decrease is explained by the drop in production in 3 major countries.
According to a FAS report from USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture, for 2022/23 world production of lemons and limes is expected to total 9.270 million tons. Or -6.68% compared to 2021/22, mainly due to lower production in Mexico, Turkey and Argentina.
Declining production
.Mexico: Mexican production is estimated at 2.800 million tonnes, or -5.21% compared to the previous season. The decline in volumes produced is attributed to the rise in input costs which reduced their use and impacted yields.
.Turkey: Turkish production is estimated at 1.2 million tonnes, or -20% compared to the previous season. The decline in volumes produced is attributed to the frost which affected flowering.
.Argentina: Argentinian production is estimated at 1.770 million tonnes, or -6.84% compared to the previous season. The increase in volumes produced is attributed to the drought.
.European Union: EU production is estimated at 1.567 million tonnes, or -3.80% compared to the previous season. The decline in volumes produced is attributed to unfavorable weather conditions during flowering and the impacts of a hot, dry summer recorded in Spain.
.United States: American production is estimated at 853,000 tonnes, or -9.06% compared to the previous season. The decline in volumes produced is attributed to lower yields in the state of California.
Production on the rise
.South Africa: South African production is estimated at 660,000 tonnes, or +1.53% compared to the previous season. The increase in volumes produced is attributed to favorable weather conditions and an increasing number of young trees approaching full production.
.Chile: Chilean production is estimated at 200,000 tonnes, or +42.85% compared to the previous season. The increase in the volumes produced is attributed to the much more favorable weather conditions after last year's frost and to the expansion of the areas.
The report also indicates that at a global level: the total volume destined for industry and processing is expected to reach 2.317 million tonnes (-12.56% compared to the previous season), the total volume exported is expected to reach 2.355 million tons (-5.57%) and the total volume imported is expected to reach 2.300 million tons (-2.46%) .
