VU
The kiwano, the horned melon or the horned cucumber is a fruit native to Africa but also grown and sold in Spain. Shaped like a small melon with horns on top, it is rich in vitamins C, A, B6, magnesium, calcium and iron, and is very beneficial to human health.
Today, its cultivation extends to many countries from Australia and New Zealand to Chile, Argentina, the United States, and Israel.
In Spain it is grown on the coast of Granada, specifically in Almuñécar. Since the number of harvests is still quite low, a large part of the fruit is imported from New Zealand.
A horned melon provides 13% of the daily value of iron, which is used for the production of red blood cells and the transport of oxygen. It is also rich in magnesium and zinc that promote mental health and brain function.
Above all, its potassium content reduces inflammation and helps regulate blood pressure.
According to data from the World Health Organization, horned melon apparently improves cognitive function, neutralizes free radicals in the body, slows the aging process, and aids digestion. Its seeds contain oleic acid and linoleum.
And finally, the pulp of the horned cucumber contains beta-carotene, which strengthens the body's defense mechanisms and promotes healthy skin and eyes.
