Peruvian dragon fruit exports are experiencing exponential growth
With a 570% increase in sales and Europe as its primary market, Peruvian dragon fruit is conquering the international market
Peruvian dragon fruit exports surged 570.6% to $1.332 million between January and August 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, according to the Agro-exports Management of the Association of Exporters (ADEX). This volume represents 412 tons, a 343.5% increase from last year's 92 tons. The European Union is the leading destination, with the Netherlands and Spain accounting for 93.8% of sales.
This exotic fruit, rich in vitamin C and appealing to consumers seeking new flavors, is experiencing growing global demand, suggesting a promising future for its production. In Peru, small producers in Amazonas and San Martin cultivate it, along with emerging regions like Piura, Huaral, and Chanchamayo.
ADEX highlights the need to train farmers in agricultural practices and strengthen the promotion of the fruit, as well as manage protocols to open markets like the United States.
It is worth noting that in all of 2023, Peruvian dragon fruit exports reached $225,736, a 1,142.5% increase compared to 2022.
