Saint-Charles International plans its development up to 2040.
Europe's largest distribution market launches studies for its 2025-2040 development.
Since signing the "Saint-Charles 2040" development partnership project with local authorities on January 9, Europe's largest market has launched several feasibility studies to define the developments to be carried out over the next 15 years. The studies launched to date aim to create a road center, develop land to accommodate more companies, improve mobility on the platform, in particular with more sustainable transport, develop multi-modality with maritime at Port Vendre (the Fruitière group has taken over the concession of the port for 15 years), rail with the relaunch of the Saint-Charles-Rungis line and connections with the future rail freeway for combined transport, to be able to load trailers and containers.
80ha and 150 companies for €2.3 billion in sales
Saint-Charles International, in Perpignan, has been Europe's leading fresh produce marketing, transport and logistics center since 1970. Today, the platform covers almost 80 hectares and is home to over 150 companies specializing in international trading, transport and logistics for fresh fruit and vegetables. This sector generates sales of over €2.3 billion, 40% of which is exported. In fact, Saint-Charles International is the largest employer in the Pyrénées-Orientales region, with over 2,500 direct jobs.
55% Spanish products, 35% Moroccan, 10% local
The platform has been built up over time. From 100% citrus in the 70s, representing a volume of around 100,000 tonnes from Spain alone, Saint-Charles International now markets just over 1,800,000 tonnes, of which 50% vegetables and 50% fruit/citrus. Spain now accounts for 55% of supply, Morocco for 35%, and other origins, including produce from the Pyrénées-Orientales region, for 10%.
Fast, multimodal redistribution throughout Europe
This ability to provide just-in-time redistribution to any point in France and Europe, from January 1st to December 31st, probably the most diversified and comprehensive range of fruit and vegetables in Europe, makes the platform the back-up base for the major retail chains. Saint-Charles International has also developed all options for combined transport by road, rail and sea. It also plans to connect to the future European multimodal road-rail freeway.
