Decline in banana imports to China during 2024

Vietnam and Laos stand out as the only suppliers that managed to increase their banana exports to China.
China imported 105,000 tons of bananas in September 2024, representing a 13.82% decrease compared to the same month in 2023. In terms of value, these imports reached $62.8 million, a 16.70% reduction compared to September of the previous year.
According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China, from January to September 2024, China's total banana imports amounted to 1.2 million tons, an 8.50% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. The value of these imports reached $654.7 million, declining by 22.44% compared to the same period the previous year.
Regarding the main suppliers from January to September 2024, the top five are:
Vietnam: 486,000 tons (39.34%) with a value of $201.3 million; Philippines: 311,000 tons (25.20%) with a value of $174.7 million; Cambodia: 182,000 tons (14.77%) with a value of $115.6 million; Ecuador: 177,000 tons (14.36%) with a value of $119.4 million; Laos: 61,000 tons (4.96%) with a value of $29.4 million.
Among these suppliers, only Vietnam (+22.30%) and Laos (+129.88%) increased their export volume to China, while the Philippines (-39.79%), Cambodia (-9.14%), and Ecuador (-10.61%) showed decreases in their cumulative shipments up to September 2024 (preliminary data).
The companies importing bananas in China during 2024 are distributed across 19 provinces, with Shanghai standing out with 584.6 thousand tons, followed by Liaoning with 225.3 thousand tons, Zhejiang with 88.1 thousand tons, Guangdong with 66.0 thousand tons, and Tianjin with 59.4 thousand tons.
