Liberia, which traditionally sources potatoes from Lebanon, may now view the Kurdistan Region as a reliable supplier.
The Kurdistan Region has exported its first shipment of locally grown potatoes to Liberia, marking the beginning of a new trade agreement. The deal involves monthly exports of 100 tons of potatoes, facilitated by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which ensured compliance with health and export regulations.
The shipment was transported to Mersin, Turkey, and then shipped by sea, arriving in Liberia successfully after 34 days. Plans are also in place to expand the market for other agricultural products from the region, including onions, in several African countries in 2025.
Although initial delays occurred due to legal procedures, the potatoes were well-received in Liberia, with a sample sent to officials receiving praise for their quality and taste. Liberia, which traditionally sources potatoes from Lebanon, may now view the Kurdistan Region as a reliable supplier.
The KRG has prioritized agricultural growth to diversify the economy, focusing on exports such as pomegranates and apples. In 2023, over 13,000 tons of potatoes were exported to the UAE and Saudi Arabia, while 600 tons were sent to Syria in 2024 through the Semalka border crossing.
