Winter comes, but mandarins don't: historic drop in Kinnow production in Pakistan
VU
Pakistan is facing an unprecedented citrus crisis.
Pakistan is facing a crisis in citrus production, aggravated by climate change. Despite the arrival of winter, the famous Kinnow are still not available in the markets, which has impacted both exports and domestic sales.
According to agricultural experts, factors such as smog, fog and delayed low temperatures have reduced production and quality of mandarins. This year, Kinnow production is estimated to be down 35% compared to previous seasons.
Structural problems
The problem also lies with the old citrus varieties in the country, some more than 60 years old, which are not resistant to diseases and current climatic conditions.
Waheed Ahmed, president of the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, noted that 50% of citrus processing plants are closed due to low production. He warned that without the urgent introduction of climate-resistant varieties, exports could cease altogether.
Impact on exports
Pakistan used to be a major exporter of mandarins. In 2020-21, the country reached an all-time high by exporting 460,000 tons of Kinnow. However, the current situation puts this position in global markets at risk.
