According to local media, this initial shipment comprised 21,210 kg (46,760 lbs) of fresh South African avocados. Shipped from Durban, the avocados arrived in Shanghai. The fruits will be showcased at the upcoming China International Import Expo (CIIC) in November, recognized as the first import of this kind from South Africa.
Transit times between South Africa and China are shorter compared to other avocado-producing countries, like those in Latin America. This could benefit South Africa by increasing its shipments to the Chinese market.
Last year, China imported $151 million worth of avocados. Peru remains the top supplier at $108 million, significantly ahead of Chile at $27 million and Kenya at $7.85 million, according to World Bank's World Integrated Trade Solution (WITS) data.
