Despite its reputation as a cold, landlocked country, Kazakhstan is now growing and exporting bananas using cutting-edge greenhouse technology.
In a move that surprised many, Kazakhstan has become a player in the global banana market. Despite its reputation as a cold, landlocked country, Kazakhstan is now growing bananas using cutting-edge greenhouse technology, according to local media. This innovative project allows the Central Asian nation to cultivate tropical fruit in controlled environments, defying natural climate limitations.
Officials say the project is part of a larger plan to diversify the economy by investing in non-traditional industries. Historically dependent on resources like oil and agriculture, Kazakhstan is now proving it can adapt to modern challenges and global market trends.
A banana farm in Kasymbek Datka, Turkestan region, is celebrating its second harvest this year. It has produced 385 tons of bananas in the first harvest and expects 400-500 tons by year-end.
Currently, they supply bananas to Almaty and Shymkent, meeting just 5% of demand, according to the managing director. "Ecuador is still the main supplier, but their bananas cost 100 tenge ($0.20) more per kilogram due to logistics. Our bananas are priced at 600 to 650 tenge ($1.14 to $1.23) per kilogram.", explains the manager.
Experts highlight that these greenhouse-grown bananas are not only high quality but also environmentally friendly. Using efficient farming techniques, the initiative reduces the need for imports, supports local farmers, and creates new jobs in rural areas.
