Cherry season kicks off in China with arrival of first Chilean shipments
Boosted by ideal weather and growing demand, exports are set to rise by 59% this season
The arrival of the first batch of Chilean cherries in Shanghai has officially marked the start of the season, with more shipments expected at ports across China.
According to the Chilean Cherry Committee's latest forecast on October 3, exports this season are projected to reach 131 million boxes, totaling 657,935 tons — an impressive 59% increase compared to last year. The surge is credited to ideal climatic conditions and improved customs procedures, making the export process to China more efficient. Local media notes that the post-COVID recovery, alongside increased orchard output, has laid the foundation for strong growth this season.
With cherries accounting for 27% of Chile’s fresh fruit exports, China remains the largest consumer. This trade reflects the close economic ties between the two nations. While logistical hurdles remain, Chilean growers and exporters are optimistic about China’s continued demand. To facilitate the rising imports, dedicated shipping routes now connect key Chinese ports, including Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou.
