La Libertad leads national asparagus exports, followed by Ica and Lambayeque.
By week 46 of the 2024 campaign, Peru exported 15 million boxes of fresh asparagus (5 kg per box), representing a 10.8% decrease compared to the same period the previous year, according to Leylha Rebaza García, director of the Peruvian Asparagus and Horticultural Institute (IPEH).
La Libertad region led exports with 47%, followed by Ica (25%) and Lambayeque (17%). During this campaign, the United States accounted for 73% of the total exports, followed by Spain (11%), the United Kingdom (6%), the Netherlands (4%), and Brazil (1%). 63% of the volume was transported by sea and 36% by air.
Rebaza highlighted the efforts of the Technical Table led by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) to address the cadmium problem in agriculture, promoting quality and competitiveness.
Furthermore, in collaboration with Senasa, tests are being conducted with modified atmosphere (MA) packaging to combat pests in green asparagus, a technique internationally recognized for its effectiveness and sustainability.
