Argentine scientists have unveiled a new variety of plum.
A fresh and profitable option to diversify fruit cultivation.
The San Pedro Agricultural Experimental Station (EEA) in Argentina developed the Silvana INTA plum, registered in the National Variety Registry in 2024. This new variety caters to producers' demands for innovative options. Silvana INTA is a Japanese plum obtained through open pollination of the Letizia cultivar.
The fruit weighs approximately 110 grams, has a bicolor skin (yellow with bright red on 80%) and sweet pale yellow flesh, ideal for fresh consumption. The plant has a semi-erect growth habit, medium vigor, and requires 510 hours of winter chill for development. Harvesting occurs between January 10th and 15th, offering an attractive option due to its production season. However, it is self-incompatible, requiring planting alongside another variety with simultaneous flowering.
Since 2022, Silvana INTA has generated significant interest among producers during field visits organized by the EEA. The station is working to enhance alternatives to strengthen the competitiveness of the fruit sector. This variety is available through agreements with INTA.
