Despite a decade of declining volumes and increasing revenues, the 2023/2024 season saw a drop in both exports and profits.
In the last decade, Spanish tomato exports have steadily declined, although revenues generated have increased, according to Estacom (Icex-Tax Agency) data. However, in the 2023/2024 campaign, this trend was reversed, registering a reduction in both indicators.
Since the 2014/2015 campaign, countries such as the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and Germany have reduced their purchases of Spanish tomato. United Kingdom leads this drop with -59.94%, followed by France (-46.2%), Netherlands (-42.86%) and Germany (-9.47%), although the latter showed a slight rebound in the recent campaign.
In total, exports have fallen by 342.97 million kilos, down 35.56% since 2014/2015. In the 2023/2024 campaign, Spain exported 632.61 million kilos, down 35.16% from 2014/2015.
Despite the drop in volume, Spain generated 1,094.37 million euros from tomato exports, with an average price of 1.73 euros per kilo. The United Kingdom paid the highest price (2.29 euros per kilo), followed by Germany (1.87 euros) and the Netherlands (1.69 euros).
Germany was the main buyer, purchasing 205.48 million kilos of tomatoes for 384.89 million euros. France and the Netherlands ranked second and third in volume, while the United Kingdom stood out for the value paid. Poland was the fifth largest importer of Spanish tomatoes.
