India reopens onion trade with Bangladesh

First consignment of Indian onions enters Bangladesh after ban.
Bangladesh has officially resumed onion imports from India, a move expected to ease domestic price pressures after months of volatility, according to local media outlets.
This month, a consignment of 100 metric tonnes of onions entered Bangladesh through the Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj, transported by four trucks and handled by port operator Panama Sonamasjid Port Link Limited. This marks the first shipment since India suspended onion exports eight months ago.
Local traders welcomed the resumption, noting that additional supply from India should help stabilise prices in Bangladesh’s fruit and vegetable markets.
The decision follows an announcement on August 12 by Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin, who confirmed the government’s approval of onion imports to counter recent spikes in consumer prices.
