After complying with the established phytosanitary measures, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) enabled areas that produce sugar mango in Magdalena to enter the Work Plan for the Export of Fresh Vegetables with Europe.
The ICA examined compliance with the requirements for the registration of production zones for fresh fruit destined for export, the registration of exporters, and the registration of packing plants.
According to Jairo Tamaris, sectional manager of the ICA in Magdalena, the Institute is responsible for the audits of the farms, the monitoring of the processes, as well as the registration of the farm as a producer of fresh fruit destined for export. In addition, it has to examine the trapping nets for fruit flies in various areas that are in charge of exporting to Europe.
Tamaris added that producers seek access to international markets with a unique product, native to the Santa Marta and Ciénaga region, such as sugar mango, which is well appreciated by the European market and others such as Russia, Canada, and the Arabian countries.
Sugar mango export volumes in the department of Magdalena showed growth, going from 200 tons in 2018 to 500 in 2019, and 1.000 tons in 2020, which means an annual increase of 33 %, according to Procolombia.
