The US market has re-opened for Argentinian lemons.
The first shipment of Argentinian lemons for the United States departed from the port of Rosario (Tucumán region). This is the first shipment since 2001, when Argentinian citrus were not allowed on the US market for sanitary reasons (pests, diseases).
The US administration reversed the ban in 2016, but it was only in August 2017 that imports were officially allowed. The first shipment of about 30 tons of lemons had to wait for the harvest that has just begun.
The re-opening of the US market will allow the export of 12,000 to 14,000 tonnes of lemons according to industry estimates. Argentina produces about 1.5 million tonnes of lemons a year, 80% of which come from the Tucumán region. The country exports around 200,000 tonnes of fresh lemon, 75% of which goes to the European market.
