Costa Rica encourages a responsible production for pineapple

The Costa Rican authorities is promoting the "responsible production” of pineapple, in order to silence critics on environmental issues and labour.
In Costa Rica, the intensive cultivation of pineapple has raised environmental problems (pesticides ..) and for labour law. Strongly criticized, the government is now promoting the "responsible production" of pineapples.
A national platform for responsible production and trade of pineapple was born. This platform is already making progress after only four months, said the Minister of Agriculture, Mrs Gloria Abraham. The plan encourages good agricultural practices, production and processing made in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.
Costa Rica is the leading exporter of pineapples in the world and the largest supplier of the United States and the European Union. Pineapple is the largest export product for agriculuture with 733.9 million USD in 2010 according to the Ministry of Foreign Trade.
