Relations between China and Australia are deteriorating. China threatens to raise tariffs on Australian products. Australia is now turning to India.
While Australian products are under threat of an increase in customs duties in China, the Australian Minister for Agriculture announced to have made a breakthrough with India.
Australia has negotiated new biosecurity agreements opening the door to more export opportunities with India for Australian producers of barley and fruit. These deals are also expected to boost export volumes of Australian fruits such as table grapes, apples, pears and summer fruits.
"It is a massive market of young, health-conscious and vegetarian consumers looking for fresh, safe and high-quality fruits and vegetables," said Minister David Littleproud.
China is Australia's 1st trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at AU$235 billion in 2018-19. India is 8th with AU$ 30.3 billion in 2018-19. In 2018 Australia exported AU$664 million worth of agriculture, fishing and forestry products to India. In 2019, Australia exported AUD 830,000 of table grapes, AU$352,000 of apples and pears, and AU$180,000 of summer fruits to India.
