Potatoes: Estimated drop of 5.79% for world production

According to provisional data from the FAO, world potato production in 2022 will be down around 5.79% compared to the record production recorded in 2021.
In 2021, according to data from the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), world potato production reached a record volume of 376.1 million tonnes.
For this year 2021, the world areas dedicated to potatoes increased by 7.4% to reach 18 million hectares, the highest level since 2013. Asia recorded the strongest growth (+15%) areas reaching 10.3 million hectares. In Europe, surface areas are declining (-3.5%) to reach 4.3 million hectares.
For this year 2021, Asia produced more than half of the world's potatoes, with production (+15.3%) reaching 197.5 million tonnes. China produced 94.4 million tonnes and India 54.2 million tonnes. Europe is the 2nd production zone with 102.5 million tonnes, i.e. -3.8% compared to the previous year. Africa produced 28 million tons, similar to the previous year.
For the year 2022, according to provisional data from the FAO and the national statistics of the countries, world production should reach 354.3 million tonnes, i.e. -5.79% compared to 2021. This decline is mainly due to climatic conditions. unfavorable to yields as well as the reduction in surface areas.
