The 2021/22 table grape season has come to an end and production has recorded a further increase in volume which has greatly exceeded the 66.1 million boxes produced in 2019/2020 and the 74.9 million boxes produced in 2020 /21.
The volume exported reached 74.5 million boxes (4.5 kg) which is a volume higher than the 71.5 million boxes exported during the 2020/21 season.
In terms of destination markets, exports to the EU account for 53% of total volume and exports to the UK 22%. Exports to Canada 6%, exports to the Far East 4%. In these external markets, exports from Peru and Chile have increased and the South African sector must remain vigilant and closely monitor these developments in order to benefit from favorable periods.
According to SATI, the areas have decreased this year with 20,564 hectares for 2021/22 against 21,798 hectares in 2019/20. The production of seedless grapes continues to increase and the production of seeded grapes has fallen sharply.
