Melons, bad spring weather delays campaign
Spain
Wednesday 18 June 2008
A slow start for Mediterranean melons this season, due to a spring with uncertain weather which contradicted the early warm temperatures.
Spanish products (Galia, Cantaloupe and yellow melons) began to be priced on European markets towards the end of April, while products from Costa Rica were still present. In Italy, Sicilian netted melons overlapped with the last arrivals of Brazilian yellow melons and Moroccan netted melons.
Between the end of April and the beginning of May list prices (average of all types present) reached around 1 Euro/kg on the Madrid produce market, 0.80 Euro in Perpignan in France, whereas in Munich average list prices were about 1.20 Euro. In Holland average prices of fruit imported from Spain were between 1.15 and 1.55 Euro/kg depending on type and size, whereas melons from Costa Rica continued the downward trend that had been going on for several weeks, reaching 0.60 Euro/kg.
