Isabelina is a new mandarin variety that promises to transform the Chilean citrus market.
Johanna Mártiz, a researcher at the Catholic University, has developed an innovative Isabelina mandarin that could transform the Chilean citrus sector. The result of 17 years of research in the Citrus Genetic Improvement Program, this variety stands out for its easy peeling, seedless nature, and lack of need for anti-pollination nets, qualities that make it appealing to both consumers and producers.
The new variety is derived from the Oronules clementine, but with enhanced characteristics that differentiate it in the market.
Isabelina already has a provisional registration with the SAG and will be available for commercialization in 2025. Commercial trials have shown favorable results, maintaining the color and size qualities of its parent variety, but with the advantage of an earlier harvest, ideal for regions facing harsh winters.
With a view to internationalization, Isabelina has the potential to reach demanding markets like the United States and Spain, where demand for high-quality mandarins is significant. The introduction of this new variety will not only benefit farmers by reducing costs and complexities but also allow consumers to access more convenient and seedless products, marking an advancement in Chile's agricultural innovation.
