Avocado production in Australia down in volume but up in value

Australia produced 115,385 tonnes of avocados in the 2022/23 season, -5.57% by volume. The gross value of production is estimated at AUD 574 million, up 42.43% on the previous season (Photo: austrade.gov.au).
According to the annual 'Facts at a glance 2022/23' report from Avocados Australia and Hort Innovation, Australia produced 115,385 tonnes of avocados in the 2022/23 season, -5.57% down on the abundant production of 2021/22, which totalled 122,197 tonnes.
The gross value of 2022/23 production is estimated at AUD 574 million (USD 377.8 million). This represents an increase of 42.43% on the AUD 403 million (USD 265.3 million) of the 2021/22 campaign.
In Australia, avocados are produced all year round thanks to the variety of climates and conditions in 8 main production zones. The state of Queensland is still the No. 1 production zone, with a 65% share of national production, while the state of Western Australia is No. 2 with an 18% share. In 2022/23, the Hass variety accounted for 76% of Australian production, and the Shepard variety for 19%.
As far as exports are concerned, in 2022/23 Australia exported 10,672 tonnes, down 8% on the 11,611 tonnes of the 2021/22 campaign and a 9.25% share of the 115,385 tonnes produced in total. The main destinations were Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.
Australian production should continue to increase, with estimates forecasting 138,711 tonnes for the 2023-24 season.
