The Ministry of Agriculture estimates that 20,000 hectares of bananas will be eliminated in 2013.
Producers say illegal plantations are causing the crisis and the Ministry of Agriculture (MAGAP) is fighting against these illegal plantations. The Department will conduct a census and apply various penalties, ranging from fines to
the prohibition of marketing the fruit.
The ministry said it is necessary to reduce the hectares cultivated, because there is an excess of production and loss of fruit quality. Ecuador has 230,000 hectares of plantations with only 170,000 registered and 60,000 that have not been authorised.
