Chile becomes leading market for Peruvian squash exports

A 30-tonne shipment of camote-type squash from Moquegua to Chile has been certified by Peru’s National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA), the agency reported. The produce was grown in San Antonio district and shipped to Chile’s Arica and Parinacota region.

The shipment forms part of a broader trade that has already reached 2,129 tonnes this year. Of that total, 867 tonnes in 42 shipments went to Chile, making it Peru’s main export market for squash.

Peruvian squash currently has access to 21 international markets, including Spain, Chile, Canada and the UK. Export production comes from 13 regions across the country.

In San Antonio alone, around 44 hectares are currently planted with squash. Local authorities plan to bring additional growers into the production and export chain.
