Mexico provides over $14.7 million in credit to tomato growers

Mexico has allocated more than MXN 248.28 million (about USD 14.68 million) in financing to tomato producers through 48 loans issued between June 3 and August 14, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The funding forms part of the National Agreement for the Organization of Tomato Production, Supply, Marketing and Fair Prices. The voluntary agreement brings together the federal government, producers, traders, wholesale markets and supermarket operators.

The loans are being handled by FIRA, Mexico’s agricultural development trust, and distributed through banks and other financial intermediaries. Baja California, Sonora, State of Mexico and Oaxaca are leading the first round of financing.

The wider initiative is intended to support tomato production while improving coordination across the domestic supply and marketing chain. Agriculture is implementing it together with the Ministry of Finance, consumer protection agency Profeco and FIRA, with technical participation from Senasica and other agricultural institutions.
