Orange, apple, and onion prices see sharp increases in Spain

Key fresh produce items record double-digit price jumps.
In May 2025, oranges, golden apples, and onions were the basic food items with the highest price increases in Spanish supermarkets. According to consumer group FACUA, the price of a 4-kg net of oranges rose by 18.3% on average, with the largest increase seen at Dia supermarkets (+50.1%, from €3.99 to €5.99).
Golden apples became 6.4% more expensive, with Hipercor registering the steepest rise (+24%, from €2.25 to €2.79 per kg). Onion prices grew by 5.7%, with a 43.4% increase in Alcampo stores (€1.29 to €1.85 per kg).
Other fresh produce showing smaller monthly increases include lemons (+2.1%), conference pears (+2.5%), and garlic (0% change). In contrast, several fruits and vegetables became cheaper, such as iceberg lettuce (-7.6%), white seedless grapes (-6.6%), carrots (-3.7%), and 5-kg bags of potatoes (-9.4%).
Looking at year-on-year data, lemons had the highest price increase (+44%), followed by conference pears (+22%) and golden apples (+16.7%). Onions were up 13.5% and oranges 18.2% compared to May 2024.
The year-on-year declines include iceberg lettuce (-7%), carrots (-5.4%), and potatoes (-0.4%).
