Almería confirms dominant position with rising export volumes and value.
Almería is expected to export 631,000 tons of watermelon this season, marking a 21.4% increase in volume compared to the previous year. Projected revenue exceeds €229 million, reinforcing the province’s position as Spain’s leading exporter of this crop.
The Andalusian government reports that 60% of its Strategic Plan for Greenhouse Fruit and Vegetables has already been implemented. The plan focuses on improving product quality, boosting competitiveness, and expanding access to international markets.
More than 50 inspections have been conducted since April to ensure that watermelons and melons are harvested at optimal ripeness, with no reported violations. Authorities aim to prevent early harvesting to maintain product standards.
This growth comes amid efforts to reinforce sustainable production, pest control via biological methods, and quality-based branding across the fruit and vegetable sector in southern Spain.
